Reasons a Chama Enhances the Community

Chamas have long been beneficial to individuals. People have managed to accomplish so many things that would be far from their reach if they were not part of a chama. Furthermore, chamas have now become beneficial to the community at large. This is how;

  1. Sense of belonging and togetherness- Most chamas have people living in the same environment. When meetings are hosted, the members often discuss more than just the chama proceedings. Members can easily communicate about their environment since they are in common ground.
  2. Financial discipline- Chama’s rules expect all the members to contribute a certain amount. This forces them to be keen about their spending to avoid defaulting or incurring fines.
  3. Enhance development projects- Living in the same environment encourages the members to complete community projects faster and easier as they often also engage members of the community. Say if they needed a village hall, or a new well, chama members can come together to build the needed infrastructure and have a dedication placard. This advances the community and encourages non-members to join the chama
  4. Propel individual businesses- Sometimes the chama can come together to support the different members in their different businesses. Say during a meeting, rather than pay for outside catering, they choose to source from the member who has a kiosk or a small restaurant. This also exposes the member to other member who may not know about their business, and this gives the member a new market pool
  5. Grow skill set and education- Some chama’s develop CSR projects that they sometimes use to fund and sponsor youth and children in their community to further their education or even learn new skills that will empower them.

Chamas have evolved to be a fundamental part of the overall growth and development in different communities. Being hands on as they are also members of the communities they help, they have a first-hand understanding of where the best, and the biggest impact will help their people, friends and neighbours.
